FG councillors engage with Castlebar resident groups

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny TD has congratulated the Fine Gael members of Castlebar Town Council for their efforts in assisting the establishment of new resident groups. They are also meeting with existing resident groups to discuss any concerns that they may have. As with any resident groups, the local Garda Superintendent William Keaveney will attend a meeting with the groups and assign a garda liaison to each particular housing estate.

The works will involve new road surfaces, wider footpaths with new paving, new public lighting, and raised pedestrian crossings. The project is aimed at making the area as pedestrian friendly as possible with an emphasis on improved accessibility for the disabled.

Councillor looking to regulate size of headstones

Castlebar Fine Gael town councillor Ger Deere brought a motion calling on Castlebar Town Council to enact bye-laws that govern the size and scale of headstones in the new cemetery in the town to last week’s town council meeting. “This is an issue I’ve had a lot of representations about from people in the town,” Cllr Deere told the meeting. “They are concerned about the size of headstones that are going up in the cemetery and we need to preserve the dignity of the cemetery for everybody.”

Lough Lannagh village could become tourist hot spot

Castlebar’s Lough Lannagh holiday village could become a mini-Trabolgan, according to Councillor Frank Durcan. Cllr Durcan put forward a motion calling on the council to upgrade the holiday village. Town manager Seamus Granahan said he would explore the possibilities of doing so, and congratulated the people who are currently running the facility on doing a good job, but warned that finances would be a stumbling block at this current time.

Castlebar councillors looking for major reduction in rates

The tough balancing act of coming up with a balanced budget for 2010 looks to be getting harder for the executive of Castlebar Town Council. Next Tuesday the council will meet to try to thrash out a budget for the coming year, Town manager Seamus Granahan has recommend a zero per cent increase in the rates for business in the town in his manager’s report. However for the councillors that is not good enough as a number of independent councillors and the Fine Gael councillors will be looking for a reduction in the rates.

Castlebar councillors compromise to strike rate reduction

Despite some members of Castlebar Town Council saying last week they wanted a massive 10 per cent cut in rates in the town for 2010, the elected members settled on the figure of a 2.5 per cent cut in the rates.

New pay and display to operate in Dunnes car park

A new pay and display system will start to operate in the Dunnes Stores car park, Castlebar over the coming weeks. This new system will see barrier free pay and display parking operating in the car park similar to the one in use already in the other council owned car parks.

Sinn Féin Councillor Thérèse Ruane has welcomed the backing of Castlebar Town Council for her motion to reach out to the people of Haiti by making a donation to the Trócaire Haiti Earthquake Appeal. “This sends out a strong message of support and empathy to the people of Haiti who need our help to get through this very difficult time,” Cllr Ruane said.
